Cagliari is the gateway to southern Sardinia’s most distinctive wine country, where ancient grapes like Nuragus, Nasco, Monica and Girò grow between limestone, clay, Mediterranean scrub and the warm light of the Campidano.

Wine snapshot

Sardinia is a Mediterranean island with a wine tradition all its own. Vermentino thrives here, giving fresh, saline, citrus-and-herb whites, with Vermentino di Gallura from the north earning Italy's only island DOCG. Expect saline whites with citrus, herbs and orchard fruit, fragrant Nasco with honey and Mediterranean scrub, supple Monica, sun-warmed Cannonau, savory Bovale and rare sweet wines made from Girò.

Also worth a sip

Sardinia has an entire drinking culture beyond wine built around the plants, fruit and traditions of the island. Mirto is the signature, made by macerating aromatic myrtle and traditionally served after a meal. Mirto rosso comes from dark berries and carries ripe fruit, herbs and a faint tannic edge, while the rarer mirto bianco leans toward flowers, leaves and Mediterranean botanicals. Cagliari also has a strong beer connection through Ichnusa, which began in the city in 1912 and is still brewed nearby in Assemini.

Ask specifically for mirto bianco when you see it. Mirto rosso is the classic after-dinner pour, while the white version is considerably less common and gives you a more herbal, floral expression of the same Sardinian plant. For something casual with lunch, order an Ichnusa Cruda. It is unpasteurized and comes from the brewery in Assemini just outside Cagliari.
