Katakolon is the little Ionian port with a surprisingly deep wine story, opening into the vineyards of Ilia where Avgoustiatis, Mavrodaphne, Roditis, rare Tinaktorogos and a historic local clone of Refosco grow within easy reach of Ancient Olympia.

Ilia’s drinking culture extends naturally from the vineyard. Local distilleries produce ouzo and tsipouro, the grape-pomace spirit that historically gave winemakers another use for what remained after pressing. The region has also played with small-scale craft beer, including Olympica Magna from Ilia, produced with Greek malt, hops, wild aromatic herbs and spring water from Erymanthos.
Drink tsipouro slowly beside small plates rather than treating it like a single shot. Add a little cool water if you want the aromas to open further, then taste it with olives, cheese or seafood. Around Brintziki, ask whether any locally brewed Ilia beer is being poured during your visit because the estate has also been associated with regional beer production.
